Skittles

Adam gave Denali his empty Skittles wrappers to play with the other night. I wasn't too sure how I felt about that...But she absolutely loved them and she was happy for a long time...So I guess it's not too bad, right?

P.S. I've posted 3 times today so look down for complete updates! Denali and I are leaving for Montana with my parents and brother tomorrow afternoon so I will be absent from the blogosphere for a while. Feel free to offer to help Adam get projects done around my house while I'm gone! Or just encourage him to do them himself! It would be much appreciated! :)

It's Been a Hard Day's Night

Last Thursday I got a call in the afternoon from the Young Women's president in our ward asking if I could come to mutual (youth group) that night and be a driver for the Road Rally they were doing. It was happening during the time when Denali usually goes to bed so I told her I wasn't sure Adam would be down with that. So she asked for Adam's number and told me she'd convince him, and of course she did! She's very persuasive. By the time 7pm rolled around I wasn't so sure I wanted to go...I was tired and running around with a bunch of screaming teenagers wasn't exactly appealing at the moment. But, never to let someone down, I headed over to the church.

After a quick explanation of the rules (and finding out my car was too small and ending up riding with Lissa instead) we were off with 6 girls in the car to follow our clues to the houses we needed to go to. We had to get a picture with at least one person from each house we went to, and we had to use the least amount of mileage possible. Also, everyone had to be in the picture, including drivers. We parked pretty far away from places and ran and used the timer on my camera to get the pics. It was a fun time, but we didn't end up winning because we didn't think to use our trip odometer and just used the regular odometer on the car and therefore didn't have a super accurate mileage count. It was a big bummer. I still think we should have won because we were the only group to actually have all the people in our pictures. Oh well!

Well, one of the clues took us to the Prince's house. Well I visit teach Ellie, and her husband Matt does all sorts of construction and even installs fireplaces. Well as we're talking to Ellie before we leave she mentions that Matt is over at my house installing my stove right then. I had no idea! And Lissa starts freaking out like "Oh no! She didn't know! It was a surprise!!" Poor Ellie! I told everyone to forget about it and that I would just pretend to be surprised when I got home. Haha! I knew that wouldn't work though. Lissa and I ended up telling people when we got back to the church. However, I suspected something was up before I left to help with the road rally because that morning I'd noticed that the mirror in front of the fireplace had been moved and when I asked Adam why he'd moved it he said he was just checking stuff out and was kind of noncommittal. I didn't push because it seemed like he was trying to do something.

So when I got home (a little before 9pm) Denali was still up and Matt was still installing our stove. What is usually a quick job, turned into a much larger job. Of course! That's just how this house is! He ran in to some issues, and officially awarded us the dirtiest fireplace/chimney he'd seen. yay! haha We'd never used it (it was totally unsafe) so at least we know the dirt wasn't from us. Around 10 or 10:30pm he called it a night and told us he'd come back the next day to finish it.

Friday evening Dad watched Denali while Adam and I went with some friends to see New Moon, which was fantastic! We had tons of fun! We got home around 10pm and I was surprised that Denali was still awake. Dad had just tried to put her down again and she was screaming bloody murder. It was really strange. We talked for a bit and Blake and Dad went home. Matt was still working on the stove. I went and ended up nursing Denali to sleep (which I don't usually do because I don't want that to be the habit) because she was so distraught. Matt left sometime between 10:30-11 and our stove was all installed, YAY!! All Adam had left to do was put the bricks in the box and put the door on.

Of course the bricks are all different sizes and they only fit in there one way but it's kind of complicated to figure out. In his sleepy stupor at 11pm it just wasn't working so we got ready for bed and hit the sack. About 20-30 min after we fell asleep Denali wakes up screaming her head off. What the heck?! This was SO strange! She'd only been asleep for 1.5 hours and she never wakes up screaming. Adam was trying to console her first, then I went and tried to console her, then nursed her, then tried to console her again, then Adam took over and got her quiet and asleep in his arms but ever time he tried to lay her down...screaming ensued! Finally we gave up. We got up, turned on the lights and went to the living room.

Adam was able to finish putting together the wood stove while Denali and I played. He got a roaring fire going and we started to watch the Little Mermaid. When she finally seemed happy and tired again I went and nursed her again and she actually went to sleep this time. You know...around 3am. BLAH! And she didn't really sleep in at all!

I had called the doctor earlier that day because she had been spitting up phlegm and I mentioned that she was more "needy" and the nurse told me if it got any worse to come in. We decided screaming all night was "worse" and called and saw the doctor in the morning. Turns out she has an ear infection and laying down makes it hurt worse! (Oh and we found out she now weighs 14lbs 8oz) She's now on amoxacilin and we're hoping it works!

Saturday night was rough too, Sunday night was better, and then last night was rough too. Nothing like Friday night though! I'm so glad it was on the weekend though and Adam was able to help! The amoxacilin has totally messed with her bowels and given her acid poo and her buns look like they are on fire! Now we're on a special care regimen for her buns too! We're supposed to use all sorts of creams, not use wipes (wash cloths instead), and give her buns as much oxygen as possible...meaning she gets naked time!

However, we are finally warm in our house! It is nice and toasty in here! Adam even got it up to 92 degrees in here on Friday night, just to see how hot he could get it. We are LOVING it! Feel free to come over and warm up anytime!! :)

P.S. I need to note that Adam and Matt carried the stove in, just the two of them. And it weighs around 450lbs!!

New Babies

Last week Adam and I were both blessed with two new "babies"...Not the human kind though! After each of us saved up for more than a year both of our dreams came true! On Wednesday evening I went over to an interesting man's house (who I found on craigslist) with my dad to check out his 12" apple power book. It was loaded with software and seemed like a great computer! I offered him $50 below his asking price, and he accepted since I'm a brand new mom. I had originally planned to buy a refurbished computer directly from apple for $899, instead I got this computer loaded with free software, for $300. I saved $599!! Yay!! I've been busily transferring all my files and music over to it from the external hard drive ever since!

Then on Thursday I had to wait by the front door (and ask permission of Adam to even take a shower) to make sure I didn't miss the FedEx delivery person. They were coming to deliver Adam's M1 Garand. He had been saving for it for well over a year and ordered it several months ago. It is an actual rifle from WWII, in pristine condition, and it works! He has been so excited about the gun for so long he wasn't sure if he'd built it up so much that when he got it he'd be disappointed. Believe me...he wasn't! Here's some pictures of his joyous occasion...

Run, Savy, Run!

Here's some pictures of me running in the 5k last Saturday. Enjoy!
P.S. I just checked the running website and found out some interesting tidbits about the race. 103 runners participated, I finished before 9 of them. The old woman I passed was 68, the old man was 60, and the little girl was 10! haha! My pace was at 11:39. Last but not least, about 25 runners who were running the 9 mile race (started 30 min before mine) finished before I did! :) I can only improve from here, right?!

I did it!

I ran the 5k! I ran farther than I have ever run in my entire life! I can't believe it! I came in 6th in my age group, 93rd overall, with a time of 36 minutes and 9 seconds... Unfortunately I did not meet my goal of doing it in less than 35 minutes, but I was awful close! I didn't have a watch or any way to tell how long it was taking me so I was pretty happy with my time. I did, however, accomplish the goal that Adam set for me, which was to complete the race without walking. (I found out later nobody thought I would actually accomplish that one!)

I started off the race next to Jill W. and Mike B. but they were gone in a flash! I knew that would happen though. I started out a little faster than I should have and quickly felt slightly nauseous, so I slowed my pace. Of course people were passing me left and right... Old People, Kids, Teenagers, Fat People... You name it, they passed me. I was okay with that though! Although it did make me set a new goal... To not be the very last person to cross the line.

Slow and Steady definitely "won" the race for me! I didn't run any faster than I felt I could. I tried to enjoy the scenery, and I did a lot of staring at the couple of butts of the people in front of me. haha! Lots of people passed me going back the other way before I'd even got to the half way mark... Including Jill, Mike, and Blake. It was kinda funny! They all cheered me on. I did eventually pass the old fat guy in front of me, and the little girl in pink who would start to run anytime I got close to her, but she eventually gave up. When I was getting close to the end Blake and a friend joined me to jog me in, then we saw Adam waiting with the camera to cheer me on, and a bit later Jill joined in.

Blake had coached me ahead of time how to eat and drink before the race and how to run the race (pace wise). He had talked about sprinting to the end. I didn't tell him, but in my mind I was thinking "HA!!! I'll be lucky to drag my big butt across the line at a jog, let alone a sprint!" But when I was getting close to the line I saw the old Asian lady who had passed me a LONG time back and realized that if I poured it on I could pass her... So I did! I almost died in the process, but I did it! I was lightheaded and dizzy after that! My right knee hurt almost the whole time, and still hurts now, but it was all worth it.

It was so much fun and I'm so happy I accomplished my goal! I'll post pictures soon! Thanks for all the support! I'll be training and plan to do another 5K in January or February and then the Pear Blossom in April. Wanna join me? It only took me 7 weeks to get to this point!

Prunes and Nerves

Sunday night we were over at my parent's house, as usual, for family dinner. After dinner I asked if they had any baby food prunes we could give to Denali to see how she liked them. Of course my mom had some! Haha. My mom almost always has a few containers lying around because me, Blake, her, and my Grandma all like them as a dessert. This is weird, I know. But who has ever accused my family of NOT being weird?

So mom held her while I fed her, and she has rarely been so excited in her life! She started kicking and jumping for every bite and barely let any seep out of her mouth. She was in LOVE. Haha I guess the trait passed on to another generation. It was hilarious though... We were all laughing and she would look around at us like "What are you laughing about???" until she saw the spoon coming in again and then she'd start kicking and flailing again. :) (If you zoom in on this picture you can see a little bubble between her lips. haha so cute!)

So my big race is tomorrow! I am running my first ever 5K ever tomorrow morning and I am so so so so nervous! I have been doing the "Couch to 5K" program to get ready. It is a 9 week program, and I had enough time to complete it before the race, but with illness and other commitments I am two weeks behind. The farthest I have run is 2.25 miles and a 5K is 3.1 miles. Eek!

I'm also nervous because it has been too cold in the evenings to run outside so I have been running at the gym on the treadmill, which is quite different from running outside. On the treadmill I'm running about an 11 minute 15 second mile. I know I'm slow, but I've never been a runner before in my life, so I feel pretty good about it.

I'm still debating about what exactly I'm going to wear for the race. The high tomorrow is supposed to be 43, and at the time I'm running it's supposed to be 32. SO COLD! I don't want to be over dressed and have to haul around layers that I strip off, but I don't want to be under dressed and be freezing the whole time. I think I'd rather be a little warm than freezing though. My friend who is also running the race thinks I'll run faster just to get out of the cold! Haha I guess we'll see. Blake is also going to be running the race. With a personal best of running a 5K in 17 min 20 seconds, He'll be running about twice as fast as me. My personal goal is to finish in less than 35 minutes. Adam thinks my goal should just be to finish it without walking. I'm okay with a couple of very short walks (like 15 seconds or so) but I really would like to not be at the back of the pack. Wish me luck!

Who needs toys?

And this picture is just because her outfit is SO adorable today! I love it!
